Composer Amanda Lee Falkenberg talks with Andrea Macdonald, founder of ideaXme about her unique journey to compose The Moons Symphony as well as the collaborative nature of the project.
The Moon Landing’s 50th Anniversary
On Saturday, 20 July 2019, the world witnessed the 50th Anniversary of the first humans landing on The Moon. A huge outpouring of emotion was reported by the media. Many were united in the realisation of what is possible when humans work together. The moon mission continues today as NASA ARTEMIS 2024 attempts to take another giant leap for Mankind in 5 years, and private space companies including Blue Origin and Space X work on future missions, some promising to land on the Moon in as little as 2 years.
The Moons Symphony
Harnessing the awe of this historic anniversary and capturing the spirit of what can be achieved in reaching further, Amanda Lee Falkenberg, award-winning composer has created a potentially world changing piece of music. Her objective, to hold on to this recent experience and encourage Mankind to build on the multinational collaboration that already exists in space, making the work on the International Space Station (ISS) possible. In short, she would like us to put down our differences and step up our efforts to work together and tackle some of the world’s greatest challenges.
“The reason why I think it has potential to change the world is because of the collaborative spirit that’s going on with this symphony. It’s not just the powerful healing vibrations of the music; it’s all these other incredible entities that have come on in around this moon symphony, such as NASA scientists and astronauts,” says Amanda.
Music: The Universal Language
Using music as the international language to convey her call to action, The Moons Symphony is inspired by 7 moons and wonderfully captures the awe of space and what is possible if humans reach further.
“I feel that through the power of music – it’s a universal language, and everyone can relate to music, and everyone can relate to space, and everyone can relate to our planet, and I feel it really does have potential to make an impact.”
The Overview Effect
She also gained inspiration from what is called The Overview Effect, which is what astronauts experience when looking at the Earth, suspended in space, for the first time, often described as a view of “breathtaking beauty and fragility.”
In conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Hubble Telescope, Amanda will be presenting The Moon Symphony at the Art of the Cosmos exhibition in Los Angeles.
Music with a Message
“For me, it’s the music, it’s the message, it’s planet Earth.”
Amanda’s objective is to bring this piece of music to large audiences across the world at the biggest entertainment venues, such as Walt Disney Concert Hall and Royal Albert Hall. You can help to make this possible by sharing this interview and Amanda’s music far and wide! Go on, take a Giant Leap For Mankind!
