We have a fascinating show today focusing on the intersection of the cardiovascular system and the skeletal system.
We will be discussing interesting recent evidence that suggests a unique link between cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, a disease in which both the density and quality of bone are reduced, where bones become more porous and fragile, and the risk of fracture is greatly increased.
Bone Blood Vessels
It has been known that adequate vascular supply is critical for proper bone healing following fracture, and that bone blood vessels participate in a variety of physiological processes in the bone marrow.
However, little is known about how the blood vessels in bone contribute to bone health and disease, as well as the reverse – that is how all of the unique dynamics in the bone microenvironment have effects on other tissues.
Additionally, preliminary data by our guest today suggest some rather unique connections where aging and disease processes can “close off” the vascular system, with the blocked vessels becoming “bone-like” – hard and closed off, producing a so called “microvascular dead space.”
Dr. Rhonda Prisby Researches the Relationship Between Blood Vessels and Bone
Dr. Rhonda Prisby is Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Arlington, and with a PhD in Kinesiology/Exercise Physiology her research in the Bone Vascular and Microcirculation Laboratory focuses on the unique interaction between blood vessels and bone in states of health and disease.

About her background and how she developed an interest in science, bio-science, and the unique biological intersection between the cardiovascular and skeletal systems. An overview of the detailed micro-architecture of the skeletal system. Her recent research in the Journal of Microcirculation entitled Discovery of a bone‐like blood particle in the peripheral circulation of humans and rodents and what this finding means for human health. Her research in the Bone Vascular and Microcirculation Laboratory in regards to potential Preventative/Therapeutic interventions in such unique biological states of tissue ossification. An overview of the Bio-Physical/Bio-Mechanical dynamics involved in skeletal system biology and implications for human health.
