Xie Rong comments:
My name is Xie Rong. I am a UK based Chinese artist and mother. People call me Echo! In my earliest application to London College I wrote: I wish to be the salt that’s longing to return to the sea; I will be the echo of the tireless traveler who is forever searching and echoing. I was born in ChengDu, the heavenly city in southwest of China.
In 1995, when I was 11years old and I witnessed my first live performance in the street of ChengDu, where a group of people, young and old, western and Chinese were gathered and washing blocks of ice. This was a big turning point in my hometown history.
A group artists and activists led an environmental revitalisation and brought life back to our 2000 year old mother river: FuNan He. From River FuNan to River Thames, I drift to perform the sea in Sydney, Jeju and Turku and Cheung Chau, water shift me from home to home. Over the years, I have worked as illustrator, translator, artist and teacher. I observe and collect stories on the way. Blossoms in spring, breeze in summer, moon in autumn and snow in winter, nature moves me. It does not need individual humans, but the whole of humanity to create understanding, research, science, art, spirituality and technology.
ECO-echo is an interview series that’s rooted in socially engaged ecological art. I’d like to invite you to join my memory branch, to reach out to people, for their stories and studies. While we are on this planet together, let’s listen and share.
I am very humbled to be the Eco Art ambassador of ideaXme. A multimedia podcast platform and public life initiative that deeply believes in ideas, narratives, and the rich connectedness between all beings.
