18 October, 2017. The first ideaXme mentoring pair, Dr. Robert Brown, FIEE, FInstP, FAPS, MAE and LaNell Williams is announced.
Dr. Robert Brown, ideaXme mentor, was until recently CEO American Institute of Physics and is Adjunct Full Professor University of California Irvine and Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Centre.
Dr. Robert Brown comments:
“Working with a mentor can be extremely valuable when you are considering how to solve important challenges. This new initiative by ideaXme, specifically with LaNell at Harvard has already set off in exciting new directions involving diversity and preparedness issues that could have significant impact for new undergraduates and postgraduates. We look forward to the future reporting of our achievements and challenges.”
LaNell Williams, mentee, is a PhD Physics candidate at Harvard University.
LaNell Williams comments:
“It has been great speaking with Dr. Brown. Our conversations have given me more hope for broader and more impactful change in the science community. I have found over the years that many of us want to do great good and make a significant impact on the lives of other people, but are not aware that many other people seek to do the same. We are stronger when we collaborate as a unit for broader change and we must continue to strive towards holding each other accountable for doing our part (big or small) to contribute to greater causes. I look forward to working more with Dr. Brown in the future and I am very happy that ideaXme has made this connection.”
Dr. Brown’s career has spanned decades and includes photonics research, development and long-term strategic vision-direction across sectors including academia, corporate and military. He is highly experienced in Leadership across the world, holding roles as Executive Director, Non-Exec Board member/Treasurer, Research Director, CTO and Full Professor (20 years). His business experience spans the world’s markets and includes China, USA, Europe, Japan, Korea and Russia.
Dr. Brown is also an inventor. His inventions include a new electronic correlator, photo-detector, lazer-diode and optical-fibre technologies that have since been developed into successful products for experiments involving jet engines, macromolecules, submarines, and aboard the Space Shuttle three times.
He holds 65 IP Disclosures & Patents; 12 Pending. Moreover, has had 125 peer-reviewed research papers published.
Further detail of this distinct mentoring programme, which will amongst other things, concern issues affecting the new Physics undergraduate, such as diversity and lack of preparation, will be announced shortly.
ideaXme mentors and mentees are paired through recommendations from ideaXme’s personnel, advisors, inspirers and broader network. In this instance, Rebecca Falconer, Director of News, www.stuff.co.nz, a multi-media journalist and former editor and reporter for organisations which include Huffington Post, the Guardian, Al Jazeera and News Corporation suggested LaNell as a candidate for Dr. Robert Brown.
Rebecca Falconer comments:
“LaNell is clearly an extremely smart woman and I am very pleased to see she will be a part of ideaXme’s excellent initiative. I could not think of a better mentee for Dr. Brown and I am so excited for their new ground breaking project.”
Advisors to the ideaXme mentor programme are:
Vigne Kozacek, former head of BIS Security at William Hill and founder of the Innovation Squad Ltd. Vigne is a technologist, with over 40 IT qualifications and an entrepreneur.
Vigne Kozacek comments:
“It is exciting to see an incredible collaboration of intellectuals; two remarkable people join minds and embark on a journey to make the world a better place and seeing this materialize is truly amazing. I look forward to hearing more from Dr. Brown and LaNell. This is a remarkable start to the ideaXme mentor programme with much more to come.”
Heather Longworth, specialist teacher, trainer and lecturer for over 20 years and co-founder of Syncroni, a technology platform that brings the classroom to the student.
Heather Longworth comments:
“ideaXme is to be commended for their role in achieving this pairing. Mentoring is enormously beneficial, especially when collaborators are so well matched. The mentee benefits from the experience and input of a knowledgeable mentor, while a mentor can find it immensely rewarding to observe the growth and development of their mentee, particularly when it directly results from their guidance. I wish Dr. Brown and LaNell much success!”
Andrea Macdonald, founder of ideaXme comments:
“We are excited to have introduced LaNell Williams to Dr. Robert Brown, ideaXme mentor and look forward to working with them both. Furthermore, we are grateful for the excellent recommendation from Rebecca Falconer and her continued support of our initiative.”
“We look forward to the impact that this pairing will make on both Physics education as a whole and the promotion of fairness, diversity and equal opportunities in our world.”
