Every Saturday over 800 parks worldwide, from Cornwall, NZ to CapeTown, RSA hold a 5k running event which is timed and completely free to enter. parkrun, founded in 2004 by Paul Sinton-Hewitt CBE has positively effected both the morale and the health of many of the worlds population. It is a force for good, encourages participation in sport across all ages and backgrounds. parkrun deserves public and political support.
News:
Despite worldwide disapproval, a petition which was signed by 1,000’s and public outrage of sports celebrities such as Paula Radcliffe and Dame Kelly Holmes, Stoke Gifford Council have ruled that for the first time in its history, parkrun should pay for using a park for their events. Paul Sinton-Hewitt, its founder has refused to pay for the use of Little Stoke Park and has stated that should the ruling not be reversed, he will hold the event in an alternative park to protect the integrity of parkrun. The dispute continues.
